What: Dungeons & Dragons 5e Night. Newcomers to D&D welcome!

When: TBD. If you're interested, please vote here on your availability for coming dates:
https://doodle.com/poll/fif7ce7a5keyuvnt

Schedule: Weekly or semi-weekly.

What's happening?: Take a look at the Elemental Evil Plot Synopsis thread!
Where: Discord for voice and Roll20 for visuals.

How (Do I sign up?): Here or by email. Whether you want to be a permanent part of the group, or the occasional guest player for a session, just let me know.

Never played 5e? If you’ve played Pathfinder (3.5e, the version Sero’s campaign ran), you'll be able to play 5e (D&D Fifth Edition). I can provide materials if you need them, and directly help you with character creation or any questions. Of course as we start out, there will be a tutorial period as everyone gets familiar with the game, the setup, and each other.

If you have questions, or need to contact me for any reason, I’m most reachable by my email:
Toroxus@gmail.com

But you can poke me on the forums too.

For the curious, I’ve linked to a 5e wiki page. While it’s not very useful if you’ve never played, the official book provides a step-by-step guide about making a character. As I said I can help with that, so just poke me and I’ll give you a copy of the book.

-Variant Healing Rule (Long rests do not recover HP.)

Happy to provide other online resources for 5e - the Roll20 compendium only provides the free portion of the manual.

Also willing to be a random guest player if the right role presents itself, Toro!

Hopefully Sero will be able to resume our other game at some point (Pox is too pretty to die), but I am also interested. I play a lot of 5e now in Adventures League so I also have character creation experience and most of the reference books.

Welcome aboard! You've played so much you've definitely played more than I have. If you want, you could DM if you were interested. Else, I was going to run [Omitted]. If you wanted to be a player and didn't want PotA (maybe you played it to death already) and instead wanted a homebrew or a different module, let me know, I'm sure we can work something out that everyone will enjoy.

I may be interested in a couple of months. Life is kicking my ass right now, and I haven't had the stamina for any type of gaming much lately. :(

Good luck with the dice rolling in the mean time! :)

I fear that my personal limitations while spending time with my father was the deciding factor in the decline of that game. For that, I apologize. We took a break when I went home and I neglected to ask about it when I returned home again. Pox is one of my favorite fancy party members and you're quite the RP aficionado - you definitely deserve a great group to play with!

I cant be sure about my availability, and I have never taken a stab at DM so I would hate to be the one in the driver seat.

Maybe we could do a rotating DM approach? If the group is an adventuring guild, we could have people trade in and out as the DM to send the guild on missions based around the mini story arc that the person wants to tell etc.

We could also pick up modules from 5e adventure league or boxed adventures from wizards to let us play with less prep work on the part of the DM. They are not free but it is an option. The AL modules are pretty cheap from what I have seen, but the writing is not always that good so we could fluff up the RP portions etc.

[Adventure league is kinda like little league for DND, everyone plays on the same rule set and there are limitations to keep it consistent. So a person playing in AL on the east coast will have roughly the same experience as someone on the west coast. They run the same prescribed modules (though there are 7 years of content pick from), and the loot is prescribed to keep it balanced. It basically lets you take your character and drop in to a game shop and just start playing. It generally favors combat over role playing as you are trying to get through the module in the time you have, and the DM is restricted to the paths the module allows so you cant always succeed with a creative idea if the module doesn't allow it. I am sure there is some nuance there but it is intended to keep it fair and consistent.]

I've done both homebrew and official modules, but never AL as they are more combat and less... "complex?" I have no problems DMing, but I wanted to offer the chance to you if you were itching for it.

The campaign I was planning to run was an official module from WotC that goes from levels 1 all the way up to 15 at most. It's High-fantasy, newb-friendly, a healthy mix of RP and combat leaning more towards RP and character-specific story development (resolving backstories, etc.). It's regarded in the "Top 3" from everyone I've read. While I've never played it, I have DMd other official modules and find the structure to be very intuitive for the DM and immersive for the players. Should be a great experience for new-comers and veterans alike.

I've been chatting with Wolffee and Sharei about their characters and such. Just send me an email if you have any questions yourself. I was hoping to poke you lot by the end of this week about getting together for a short Session 0 on Discord.

I would be interested in doing this. Of course, I do plan to continue our other story when things settle down for myself and I have a little more of a reliable schedule, and energy to run things again (And no, I have not forgotten a thing :P) but it would be nice to sit back and play relaxing like in a more traditional game set.

I would also like to add, fair warning to those who wish to play: Based on previous conversations with Toro, he will most likely be actively trying to kill the party, so don't get too attached to your character :P

I have a confession about that. I always play D&D. It seems I'm typically the DM, as it's a good outlet to soak up all my energy. Thus, I end up being both a player and the DM at the same time. Rest assured that I have experienced in the division between the two, and ensuring that the story is about the player's characters, and not the DMPC.

On that note: Toro doesn't have a vested interest in killing his own character, or other's. Get attached to your character. Make a real person who lives, breathes, fears, and loves. That's all I ask.

They have hopes and dreams that flicker in their eyes with each arrow that hits them. I bend every campaign to each and every player. It's not about the band of adventurers. It's Sharei, and Toro, and Sero. What does Raven get from this? Sure he saves the world or whatever; the evil is slain. But we're not revenants. When you're crawling in the snow stained crimson with your own blood, we'll need to see the fire in your eyes that keeps you from being wolf-food.

But if you're rather jump into the dragon's razor-toothed mouth, you should know I've adopted a saying to welcome players to my sessions: "Welcome to Die."

Planning a get together this weekend for a Session 0 on Discord. Should just be a quick hashout of some rules and such. If you want to stick around after, there will be character building, and any discussion you want to have with me or the other players.

I'm aiming for Saturday night being the main event. Starting at 7pm EST, and I'll stick around until 10PM if anyone wants to show up late. Likewise, I'll be around Sunday night at a similar time if that was more convenient for some. I'll post my outline here afterwards for later reference.

I may be available to meet on sunday but will be out on saturday.

I Could probably get by with a simple write up of the rules or plan as well.

Things i can think of off the top of my head that we would want to cover
  • allowed resources/books,
  • campaign alignment/mood
  • starting level
  • any guidelines for character backgrounds

Mordecai Ravenscroft - Sylvari Necromancer | Theoden Ravenscroft - Human Ranger

Instead of my 5 pages of notes on every single thing:

Players:

No PvP, Nothing over R-Rated. Nothing involving the death of children. Homebrew is okay, just run it by me before play.

Rules:
There is downtime and crafting of items, following the XGE book for the most part.
Variant Rest Rule (Short rests = 30 min vs. 60min.)
Variant Encumbrance Rule (1/4 carrying capacity per tier. Not enforced until level 3.)
Variant Healing Rule (Long rests do not recover HP.)
Custom Injury Rule (There are injuries from taking massive damage, dropping below 0, and 'dying')
Variant Critical Rule (Criticals do maximized damage instead of increased variables). For each increment over x2, add 50% more damage to the maximized.

Campaign (Big Section)

Character Creation
Creation: The better the character you make, the better everyone’s story will be, and the more fun we will all have. A good character in my eyes, is considered a character who is most realistic. The theme of my campaigns is realism within the setting. The main element many RPGs lack is FEAR. This isn’t a horror campaign, you’ll do good to think about the terror of getting shot at with arrows from the bushes when you can’t see your enemy. Think of the consequences of being a taunting ass to the constable.
Creation stats: Standard point buy system (27), characters start at level 1. Guest players are one-zero levels below party level. The party is uniform in level. You may either choose to roll hit-dice for HP, or take the average at the start of the campaign.
Alignment: This campaign is good-oriented, but you can be almost any alignment. Do NOT be stupid, uncooperative, or malevolent. You can be a selfish evil, that works with others only for your own ends, but you can’t backstab them when it’s easy. You can be strong in your beliefs, but if the party decides to do something, you can’t run off on your own adventure in rebellion. And most importantly, you can NOT be a stupid alignment, most notably as Lawful Stupid and Stupid Good. This is where you take the concept of an alignment and go absolutely zealous with it. Where you kill the guards because you think they are oppressive, just because they are the government. Or you’re so balanced between good and evil, that you’re apathetic and unmotivated.

Stat rulings: Anything that is homebrew, again, has to go through me. I’ll work with you to try to get your vision into the game.

Others: All classes and races allowed, again, anything not in the book has to get approved by me.

Game:
Allowed materials: Any of the official books, such as the Player’s book all the way up to the new Xanarath’s Guide to Everything are allowed. Anything else is pending my approval.
Game type: The campaign we will be running is a campaign made by Wizards of the Coast. It’s a high-fantasy very-high-magic sandbox game that takes place in a large valley with a variety of landscapes, enemies, and allies. The mood is realistic, so it’s mostly serious. The vibe I get from reading it is, ‘Fantasy adventurers travel through a magically-enchanted terrain to uncover a plot that will destroy the world.’
The Actual Intro: "A terrible threat gathers in the North. Throughout this region of the Forgotten Realms, savage marauders bring destruction. Monsters are on the prowl, preying on flocks, rampaging through croplands, and attacking homesteads and travelers. In settlements, discord and suspicion grow. Sinister strangers lurk in the shadows, whispering about how everything is soon to change."
The campaign will have homebrew elements specific for characters and to give the world a bit more depth. I picked this setting because it has pretty much everything: mystery, conspiracy, some politics, glorious battles, intrigue, and study. It also plays with much of the books, with a variety of races, classes, and even includes things like downtime, and renown/influence.
Adventures & Factions: You’ll start as lowly adventurers and errand-runners, but the campaign will transform you into valiant heroes, or corpses. The Forgotten Realm factions are present here, and you maybe a member. If you are a member of another faction, they may also be present here, again, pending my approval. The Renown and Influence systems are in play, so as your adventure continues, you will gain renown with factions (for good and bad), and influence with other NPCs (for good or bad).
Starting: Again, starting at level 1. You are travelers on the way to Red Larch, a town. You’re somehow part of a caravan that includes a merchant. You may be a guard, a different merchant, just traveling through on guild business, or just following rumors of good hunt or treasure. This caravan has NPC guards.
Context: Your character is not from this place, and has no prior experience with it. However, depending on your backstory, you might know something about this place. Maybe your guild told you to investigate this ruin outside of a town, or maybe you’ve just heard from other travelers. If this is something you’re looking to weave into your story, I can help you with information about the region. Every character knows the official introduction which I gave above.
